Ok, so when was the last time you played a western mmo that intergrated true pvp and pve together in a fantasy setting ? … and no i dont consider Wow pvp servers a true pvp game … more like abit of ‘slap and tickle’ with no second or third base ….
When I think about it, I can only think of 3 fantasy mmo’s that married pvp and pve succesfully together, Shadowbane, early UO, and DAOC ?? … you could argue DAOC out of the picture as you had seperate zones for pvp and pve. Although there pvp was, and still is currently probably one of the best implementations of a pvp centric game there is …. Shadowbane slowly died under its own issues, and people are still lamenting over the changes made to the pvp systems that killed UO for them ….
So why do fantasy mmo’s designers appear to consider pvp as a non legitimate game play element and is to be only added into mmo’s as an after thought (read time sink).
Is it to make up for lack of end game ? more thank likely …. is it that players are deemed not to enjoy pvp as much as pve ? one word sums this up, carebears …. or is it simply to difficult to marry pvp and pve into a fantasy setting in a meaningful way ? … very possibly
Pvpve is not the problem in its self just look at Eve online and Potbs. Admitably they are non fantasy games but they manage to do pvpve very well… and have a good or will have a good subscription base…
So maybe its fantasy genre itself that has the problem with pvpve ….
The only fantasy mmo on the horizon taking the less travelled route of pvpve is WAR. However will WAR shoot itself in the foot by taking this approach in game design or are they going to brake the mold …
Will be intersting to see if the market is ready for a fantasy pvpve game and If you beleive the hype, (Mr Barnett) yes we as an audience are. However it still remains to be seen ..
I personally think true pvpve is not possible in fantasy mmo’s and is the domain of the non fanstasy mmo games … Will WAR prove me wrong, I hope so … truely I do …
Why am I thinking about this … well I have been trying to think of how I could implement Pvp into Strangelands in a meanigful way … so far I have come up with one viable solution … faction war … between different courts with in the dreamtime … (dreamworld), more of an influence based conflict than a direct conflict… how i would do that remains sketchy, but what I did find is that it is very difficult to build a game with pvp and pve in the same room, let alone in the same space … you should try and see what you can come up with ….
