Death is certainly something we are all used to in mmorpg’s and is one the sparks much debate in the gaming community. Now I’m sure death has been discussed many times by many people and yet it still remains probably the least satisfying experience in most of the games we play. Should it be a tough penalty ? Corpse runs and experience penalties or should it be just a mere annoyance ? You die spawn back as a ghost and run back to your corpse.
Personally I think death in mmorpgs needs to have some ramifications, it is death after all. How harsh is up for debate. A harsh penalty can cause discord between party members and lessen the fun of the game. Too little a penalty and it just cheapens the game and makes goals less meaning ful. All you need to do is charge, die and be right back to charge again.
Now in the frame work of Strangelands, the multi genre mmorpg I had some ideas on what I would like to do … however before I get to those I thought at the begining of the week I would throw out the death issue and see what your feelings are on the matter. Should it be something to fear ? should it involve a penalty of some sort ? Should it be a whole seperate experience, fight your way out of the underworld ?
Have at it all … and stay tuned for later in the week for my idea … yes I know you are all on the edge of your seats with excitement :o)
