Ok well I’m about 5 days in on my foray into Eq 2 and so far I can see why people like it. Is it right for me, time will tell, however I have already been bitten by the alt-itus bug and currently playing 4 different character on AB. Is that good or bad … well its on the slippery slope to the 8th layer of hell. I just dont feel the connection to the characters or the environment they are in. Again I think its the lack of character customization …
Yes I know it does have a pretty extensive character generation tool set, however from everyone running around in Darklight Wood there really is no difference between them or me. I think this is due to the way the character generator is working. It gives lots of options for how high i want my eyebrows and do I want my ears and nose big. But at a distance I might as well be looking at a reflection in the mirror, excluding height and skin tones. This might get better when loot starts changing the characters appearence in a small way, but I dont hold out much hope. Maybe the second layer clothing / item update that Soe is looking to put into the game change the feeling I have on character connection.
Now the story line linking me character to the world is defernatly a vast improvement over a lot of newbie experiences I have had in the past and currently in some betas that I’m trying out. However this is just in the Darklight wood area, so I might have to try a different starting zone to really get the feel of your role in the bigger picture of the eq world. I will get back to this part of the game once I spend some more time seeming what the late teens and early twenties have in store for me.
Anyway back to the grind stone for me … until tommorow

I just got out of Darklight Woods, hitting nearly 22. Commonlands, Nektulos Forest… horrid in terms of quest-design compared to Darklight. It’s plain to see that it’s the “old” EQ2 design there. I’m not liking it, very much at all.
But I’m still playing. It’s just sad. Darklight was so well done, but nothing outside of it in the middle levels has the same level of polish yet. Unless I’m missing something.
so far dark light wood and its counterpart are interesting and provide some great intro questing up till the 20’s but as you said beyond that its a let down …. currently slowly lvling my necro up and probably will be out in the common lands by the end of the week. my monk is still piddling about in the new fae lands, will see how that goes once get him up a few more lvls.
However I’m already starting to get fed up with the usual fed ex, kill x of these quests that seem to be the stable of the new areas … oh well i came here hoping to find a new home but its the same as every other mmorpg … it dosnt indear me to the rise of kunark or really maintaining a subscription to eq 2
roll on potbs you are my only hope ….
Same here. Just uninstalled EQ2 after the free 7-day trial. Not a bad experience, but not enough to hook me.
well i’m still in eq 2 and probably on my 8th character, still havnt found what I’m looking for yet. However a troll sk and an iksar fury are looking good.
still wont be making this my permanat home but pootling about here until potbs comes out.
In the meantime I’m strapping on my lycra bodysuit and thigh high boots and entering Cov / Coh. Ok i jest about the thigh high boots he he. I here that it is great fun …. we shall see
Might head to vanguard when the server merges go through … when I last played this game, back in march of this year, the game had issues but the whole experience was better than eq 2 ….
If you’re still playing EQ2, I recommend going to your graphics settings and putting it in letterbox. The feature I loved most about that game was its cinematic feel.
And if your computer can handle it at all, I recommend at least looking at the game for a few minutes at a time on the High graphics setting. In some areas, it actually affects gameplay.
In the Commonlands, for example, there’s that Stonehenge-like area with all the lions and other savannah animals around it. If you have your graphics on Low, then you can see all the animals wandering there. But if you have your graphics on High, the grass is tall enough to realistically hide the lions (not to mention snakes). It improves the gameplay there immensely.
Whenever I upgrade my computer next, I’ll likely resubscribe for a while.
still fiddling about in eq2, currently running on the highest settings, got a bit of lag in towns but other than that its been a very smooth graphical experience…..
still got 18 days left and will be busting out a few more hours over the next few days … maybe Ill bug adele or someone for a grp some time … he he
